Different Types of Cutlery

Hi all,

Lets take a look at the different types of cutlery and what each knife is used for.

• Paring Knife: The paring knife is small knife with a blade around 2.5" to 3.5". It is good for peeling fruits and veggies and preforming other small tasks around the kitchen.
• Boning Knife: The Boning has a longer blade usually in the neighborhood of 5"-6". As the name suggests this flexible knife is used to cut out the bones.
• Utility Knife: Similar to the boning knife in blade size (5"-6") this knife is used in a variety of kitchen tasks such as peeling, chopping, trimming, etc.
• Santoku Knife: This hybrid is a cross between a cleaver and a chef knife. It has variety of uses such as chopping and slicing. Blade sizes run around 7"-8".
• Bread Knife: The bread knife has a serrated edge and is used to cut... you guessed it... bread! Blade size 7"-8".
• Carving/Slicer Knife: Whatever you call it this is another versatile knife that will cut thin slices of meats and vegetables. Blade 7"-9"
• Chef Knife: Blade size is around 6"-10" use this knife for chopping, slicing, and dicing.
• Steak Knives: Many cutlery sets include 4 or more steak knives which come with both fine or serrated edges. Blade sizes run in 4"-4.5" range.
• Sharpening Steel: Another staple of many cutlery sets, the sharpening steel is used to keep the knife blades sharp. Use it often and correctly to maintain a super sharp blade.
